Turin from above: rooftops, domes and viewpoints with the Alps behind

Turin makes sense from above: a grid of straight avenues, the Po, the hill and the Alps at the end of every street. The selection runs from Renzo Piano's skyscraper to the dome of Superga, by way of the free viewpoint where the locals go too.

01

On top of the towers

Piano35 and the Lingotto roof: the city and the arc of the Alps.

02

The domes

35th-Floor Lounge Bar & Restaurantโ‚ฌโ‚ฌโ‚ฌโ‚ฌ

The lounge bar and the restaurant share the top of the Intesa Sanpaolo skyscraper with a bioclimatic greenhouse: 167.25 metres above the city, by the venue's own count. It is the highest table in Turin and the reason to come is simple: the grid of the city on one side, the arc of the Alps on the other. It closes for a summer break in August.

On the top floor of the Green Pea building at Lingotto: a lounge bar and restaurant around a cantilevered pool, with a spa, whirlpools and a terrace that looks at the city and the mountains. The tourist board describes it as open from morning until late; the pool is by reservation. More an afternoon that turns into an aperitivo than a quick drink.

Panoramic Lift & Viewing Terraceโ‚ฌ

The Mole houses the National Cinema Museum, and a glass lift rises through the middle of its hall to the small temple above the dome. The museum also opens the climb on foot inside the dome. From the top Turin is all rooftops, straight avenues and, on a clear day, mountains. Tickets and closing days are on the museum's website.

A short climb from the Po, next to the Capuchin church and the National Mountain Museum. The square in front is the classic view of the city: the river, the Mole Antonelliana and the line of the Alps closing the horizon. Free and always open; at sunset the locals come up too.

Dome Balcony Viewpointโ‚ฌ

The basilica stands on the hill east of the city. A spiral staircase of 131 steps leads to the outer balcony of the dome: Turin lies below, with the plain and the mountains all around. It is out of the centre and worth the trip on a clear day; opening times of the dome are on the basilica's website.
